A new maths tutoring centre has opened its doors in Glasgow, giving local children an environment where they can get excited about maths and boost their knowledge of the subject. It is the brainchild of local businessman Saqib Rehman whose passion for maths inspired him to establish Scotland’s very first Mathnasium, an education brand with premises across the world.
Saqib wants to provide children aged 5-16 the opportunity to either catch up, keep up or get ahead with their maths so they are fully prepared and confident as they progress in their school lives, particularly when they sit their exams. The Chair of think tank Reform Scotland, Lord Jack McConnell, described it as “very worrying” that less than half of Scottish school pupils had passed their National 5 in maths, while three quarters passed English.
Not every child grows up as enthusiastic about maths as Saqib. He always knew that there was a way to engage with children and bring maths to life and give them some extra tuition while having fun in the process. Mathnasium of Glasgow South will work towards the Scottish Government’s plans to make maths more collaborative and reflective of real life, following a report published by HM Inspectors.
Teaching methods are based on a model that is internationally proven to help children succeed, using mental, visual, verbal, tactile and written techniques. Incentives, rewards and fun productive learning environments are amongst the ways that tutors engage with children.
Saqib Rehman, Centre Director of Mathnasium Glasgow South, says: “Thinking back to our maths lessons might fill many of us with horror. But it doesn’t have to be this way! I’m keen to bring a sense of fun to maths for children in the local community and exercise their minds at the right pace.
“Our talented tutors and fun, yet productive environment give children the boost they need, no matter what their ability is. The customised learning plan we offer takes into account the learning stage they are at and the way that children learn best.”
The centre is on Ayr Road, in the heart of Newton Mearns, in the premises that many still remember as being the home of Il Gelato Di Piero.
Only the greatest maths whizzes are selected to come onboard as maths instructors at Mathnasium, with many being students from either Glasgow or Strathclyde University. They must score at least 80% in an extremely tough maths quiz; these maths skills, combined with their passion for helping youngsters and an extensive training program which enables them to teach the Mathnasium way, makes them a great support for children that visit the centre.
Parents can book their child in for a free assessment at Mathnasium before receiving a personalised learning plan and beginning their sessions. The first step is to get in touch by entering your details here.
